Syria's acting leader, Ahmed al-Shara, announced that the country's armed opposition groups have agreed to disband their armed forces and unite them into a single national army.

The statement came after talks involving Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition leaders. However, the Kurdish forces that control northeastern Syria did not join the agreement.

Ahmed al-Shara said the new national army would be under the control of the country's reformed Ministry of Defense, which he said would take over all armed groups in the country and bring them under the control of a single state.

Yesterday, the new government stressed that "under no circumstances will weapons be allowed to be outside state control," which is said to be a reference to the Kurdish regions.

More than half a million people have been killed in Syria's 13-year civil war. The authorities plan to mobilize all forces to unite the rebel regions and preserve the integrity of the state.
