Mayor arrested in US for trying to inspect migrant detention center
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka was arrested while trying to inspect a newly opened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center in the US state of New Jersey.
Baraka, who opposed the opening of such a center in Newark, attempted to conduct an inspection of the ICE center with officials, which led to an altercation with ICE police.
New Jersey Deputy District Attorney Alina Habba X said in a statement on social media that Baraka entered the center without permission and ignored repeated warnings from Homeland Security police to leave.
"He deliberately chose to break the law. Such actions are not allowed in New Jersey. That's why he was arrested," Habba wrote.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy spoke out on the matter, expressing his protest at Baraka's unjustified detention, saying:
"Mayor Baraka is a model public servant who has consistently fought for the most vulnerable citizens. He should be released immediately by federal agencies."
Previously, Baraka had informed the public that this center did not have the appropriate official permits to operate.
