Reuters news agency published photos of a caravan of migrants in southern Mexico, many of whom will have to travel 1,500 km to the US border.

Many of the migrants in the caravan are from Latin American countries, including Venezuela, who say they have been forced to seek a new life due to political instability in the country and protests against the government of Nicolas Maduro.

A migrant woman traveling with her children appealed to the new US President, Donald Trump.
"We are asking the new president to allow us to cross before the borders are closed. We don't want our dreams and the future of our children to be ruined," the woman said.

Donald Trump promised to pursue a tough immigration policy during his election campaign.

"On my first day in the Oval Office, I will sign a series of historic orders to close our borders to illegal immigrants and stop the invasions of our country," he said in a statement.

This policy means that those who cross the border illegally will be imprisoned or deported. Trump is also pressuring Mexico to secure the border. If this is not done, he is threatening to impose punitive tariffs on Mexican goods.
