Forest fires in South Korea have caused significant damage. According to the latest reports, nearly 20 people have died in the natural disaster, and more than 20,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas.


242 helicopters and more than 6,000 military personnel have been mobilized to extinguish the fire. According to local government data, more than 70 percent of all fires are caused by human negligence.


According to the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs, the fire has spread to more than 17,000 hectares. The 7th-century Gunsa Temple, a cultural heritage site, is also said to have been seriously damaged.


Emergency measures are currently being taken across the country to bring the fires under full control, official reports say.
