Pilgrims in southern Iraq hit by traffic accident, casualties reported
A bus carrying Shiite pilgrims collided with a car in southern Iraq, killing seven people and injuring more than 40, AFP reports.
The tragedy occurred at 3:30 p.m. local time (the same as Moscow time) involving a bus traveling from Diwaniyah province to Najaf.
Iraqi Health Ministry spokesman Amir al-Kinani said the dead included four men, two women and a girl. Of the 42 injured, two were in critical condition.
The cities of Najaf and Karbala are holy sites for Shia Muslims, visited by millions of pilgrims each year. However, due to the poor condition of Iraq's roads, traffic accidents are common.
