The administration of US President Donald Trump has not renewed a general license that allows limited transactions through sanctioned Russian banks, Fox News reported, citing a source in the White House.

Now, full blocking sanctions will be imposed on VEB, Sberbank, VTB, Alfa-Bank, and nine other Russian financial institutions.

Until March 12, these banks were allowed to conduct transactions in US dollars to make payments for Russian energy resources.

However, due to Trump's decision to revoke this license, European countries face the risk of sanctions when purchasing Russian oil.

A Fox News source said the move is part of a U.S. negotiating strategy to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. The U.S. Treasury Department confirmed in January that the license, which was granted in January, had expired and that no further exemptions would be granted.
