A second and third nuclear power plant may also be built in Kazakhstan

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev believes that the construction of a second and third nuclear power plant in the country is possible. According to him, Kazakhstan aims to achieve economic growth by developing nuclear energy and eliminating energy shortages.

"Kazakhstan needs a high-power nuclear power plant. A second and third nuclear power plant may be built in the near future. The future of nuclear energy is bright," Tokayev said in an interview with the Ana Tili newspaper.

In a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country in October, more than 70 percent of voters supported the idea. In response, the government announced its intention to create an international consortium including five countries.

The president said that a selection of companies will be held for the project and a final decision will be made. Discussions on this issue were held with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In addition to cooperation with the possible participation of Rosatom, Chinese and Western corporations have also expressed interest in the project.

According to the Ministry of Energy, 66 percent of Kazakhstan's electricity is generated at coal-fired plants. Energy consumption is expected to increase to 152.4 billion kWh by 2035, but existing capacity may not be able to meet demand.
