Bashkortostan has suffered the heaviest losses since Russia's war in Ukraine began. According to a study by the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona based on open sources, a total of 83,338 Russian servicemen were killed in the war, of which 3,487 were from Bashkortostan.

The vast majority of those killed in Bashkortostan, 38 percent, went to the front as volunteers. This figure is almost twice the average for Russia (22%). Among them, the share of mobilized soldiers is 14 percent, and prisoners is 18 percent.

Most of the dead were rural residents, with only 19 percent living in cities with populations over 100,000. In the village of Itkulovo alone (population 900), 27 people signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense.

The youngest victim was 23-year-old Aysuvak Khasanov, while the oldest participant, 60-year-old Rim Makhmutov, has been missing since August.

Analysts believe that such large losses are due to the fact that the majority of Bashkortostan's population lives in rural areas and has limited economic opportunities. As a result, many saw the army as their source of income.

At the same time, a strong campaign was carried out in the republic to recruit volunteers for the war. These figures show how the severe consequences of the war in Russia were reflected in the regions.
